And for the final “poem a day” entry for 2024, here is a piece that I wrote while thinking about my high school days. Hell, even my early college days came to mind. But most of all, it is a piece that reflects how different I am today.
I never hit the party stage.
I never had a fake ID.
I never hit the bars 'til close.
But, I did get drunk off my ass in the barn.
Drinking in public isn't my thing,
Never was, never will.
But give me access to mom and dad's liquor cabinet
My group of friends
And a warm night out in the country.
Now that's my idea of a good time.
Now it's bonfires and early nights,
Craft beers and tequila while we worry about the kids.
But the one thing that hasn't changed is that
I would much rather stay out of the bar
And just head out to the barn.
