In my 9-5, I don’t think that people understand what I actually do. It’s not just shits and giggles and happy thoughts. It’s a lot of hard work, time, and document review. It is truly a lot of hours just going through and figuring out if what you’ve given me is helpful or not. And that does in fact, take a significant amount of time.
I understand that companies and corporations have an unrealistic view of how much time something should take. But in reality, why in the hell do you think that review of 30,000 pages of emails should only take me 50 hours to do? That’s literally 600 pages an hour. And while I understand that there are some days that I’m able to do something close to that, it depends on what is in the god damn emails. If it’s substantive, it is going to take longer. If it isn’t, it’s not going to take that long. But, I’m averaging 200 pages an hour, and that’s only a third of what I need to do. Or would you rather spend seven figures and not do the work?
I am incredibly frustrated at this point. My boss understands that it’s going to take time, it is the client we work for that is having the problem. They just don’t understand that while this is a lot of money, it’s less than what you may have to pay if you don’t let me do it. Because there is no way this is a seven figure issue unless you don’t let us prove it otherwise.
So, while I understand that you may not like it when people say it’s going to take so long to do a thing, just trust them. If they are saying it’s taking that long, it’s taking that long. And then if they get it done sooner, great! You’re happy. If it takes a little extra time, that’s okay too. But do no get mad because you have a massive thing that you’re asking to get done and having unrealistic expectations of what is going to happen.
All of this to say that it’s how I feel like the current administration is acting. They don’t realize the things that are required to do the necessary things to make sure we run a government that doesn’t just FAFO and that actually takes care of it’s people. The federal funding freeze is the prime example. And the cuts to employees which will only further bog down the system. Not to mention the numerous lawsuits that are only adding to an already backup up court system. It’s all a mess.
I have had to limit my time paying attention to the news. I give myself 10 – 20 minutes a day, and that is it. Because it is stressing me out because people don’t understand the consequences of the actions being taken. Next up will be Medicare and Social Security getting the axe. And if you don’t believe me, they already accessed your records through the Department of Treasury.
While I know I’m probably preaching to the choir, but the entire thing is just incredibly frustrating. I don’t want to live in a place where I don’t know if I’ll have access to things that keep me alive. I don’t want to live in a place where we are on edge 24/7 because toddlers are in charge and don’t like to be told no. I don’t want to live in fear of a third world war. I just don’t.
Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk. Shit is hitting the fan left and right and I’m over it. I’ll be spending the next however many years its going to take to fix this shit trying to understand how people can be so awful. And fighting for those who don’t have the privileges I do.
