Sick

You know when you think its just a head cold, or a viral sinus thing, and you just refuse to go to the doctor? Once you start to feel like death, don’t wait, just go to the doctor. I waited 3 days post death feeling and it turns out I had a fever (whoops). What I thought was allergies or a bad head cold, turned out to be a sinus infection. Three rounds of antibiotics later and I am able to sit upright and at a computer. I still feel terrible, but I feel less terrible than I did a few days ago.

The hardest part of being sick for me is the rest part of it. While I greatly enjoy lounging on my couch, I am very rarely resting the way you need to when you’re sick. I’m always doing something. Always working towards something. And right now, not working and not cleaning the house the way I normally do, and not spending time outside, it’s hard on me. I know that I need to to get better, so I have been. I binged all of Law and Order Organized Crime.

Being sick sucks, no matter who you are. The difference between a man being sick and a woman being sick is that a woman is still expected to show up and take care of her family. A man is not. And retail work culture teaches us that we can’t call in sick because we will be replaced. So we show up sick, we don’t rest, and we only get worse.

Take the time you need to get better. Rest when your body says rest. And don’t wait to go to the doctor (if you can afford it). I know that healthcare isn’t cheap, but it should be. But there are days that we don’t have a choice. We need to go to the doctor so we can get the medicine that will help us heal. And thankfully, that medication (if its a generic antibiotic) isn’t much.

Take care of yourselves. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
