Shocked We Turned Out This Way

I’ve been in a phase where I’ve been rewatching The Golden Girls, MASH, and Reba (shocker). Then the news that Loretta Swit died broke. My heart was crushed. Even as a late 20 year-old, I grew up watching MASH. It’s a comfort show. Losing Major Margret “Hot Lips” Houlihan after the week I’ve had was a blow I didn’t need. So, back to the beginning and watching it all the way through again I go.

As I’ve been rewatching shows like MASH, The Golden Girls, That 70’s Show, and many others I can’t help but laugh at the older generations. They wonder how we turned out to be progressive, thinking everyone deserves human rights and we shouldn’t stigmatize mental health and just want weed to be legal. The answer? Not only was it what we watched on TV, it’s what they taught us when YOU forced us into Sunday School every week.

These ideas shouldn’t be new to anyone. They aren’t “woke” and they aren’t things that Universities indoctrinated into us. You did it. The parents, the grandparents, the Church. You all taught us to love our neighbors and to treat others the way we wanted to be treated. The fact that you are this “shocked” about our desire to do those things is a little bit insane to me. Where else would we have learned it?

I’ve seen a lot of things on social media of people asking where these ideas came from, blaming universities and public schools for indoctrination. None of it is true. It came from you. If you don’t like it, take a look in the mirror. And figure out when the values you instilled in us suddenly became inappropriate or wrong.
