With NaPoWriMo I will likely be sharing more blog posts on my usual Tuesday/Thursday publications. I know I mentioned last week I was dealing with some health issues, and they are lingering into this week. Hopefully, by this time next week, I have a better understanding of what is next in this journey.
I’ve spent a lot of time in my life being the “medical mystery.” I would have symptoms and no doctor could figure out why. Part of me had accepted that it would just be part of my life. However, I was given a name to what was happening to me. And that itself was a huge sigh of relief.
As a woman, my concerns about my body are rarely seriously listened to. I have had to advocate for even a simple x-ray when I had a broken bone. It is absolutely ridiculous what we have to go through in order to be heard. The problem is, I’m afraid that this is only getting worse. It’s a crazy world we live in. And women, especially minority women, take it the most.
It’s time we start advocating for her. For the woman who is in pain constantly. Who just keeps getting told it’s gas. For the woman who has been sick for weeks, but they say it’s just allergies. For the woman who is paid less than her male coworkers. For the woman who got taken advantage of by a mechanic or car salesman. For the woman who has been told she only belongs in the kitchen. Or the one being denied basic healthcare because some old white man thinks he knows best.
It’s time to advocate for her. It’s time to make her feel seen. It’s time to make everyone equal.
