A ’90s Country Kind of Summer

We all have that one era of music, no matter the genre, that has us in an absolute chokehold. That one era of music we always gravitate to because it feels like home. It should be no surprise that for me that’s the powerhouse era of ’90s country.

This year I have the incredible opportunity to see five different artists from that era. I’ve successfully seen Garth Brooks and Terri Clark so far and it’s only the end of June. But later on this year I’ll be seeing Wynonna, Martina McBride, and Brooks & Dunn.

Elizabeth – how do you afford all of these concerts when tickets are so stupidly expensive? It’s easy – I just eat cheap. It sounds dumb and it sounds so simple. Trust me, I get it. It isn’t that easy for everyone. But, as a single woman who just has cats to take care of, it works for me. It also helps that the Terri Clark ticket was like $40 and someone else bought my Wynonna ticket.

There is just something about the storytelling and the steel guitar that just resonates with my soul. And gosh, we can’t forget the fiddle. I miss that in today’s world of country music. While some artists, like Lainey Wilson, Ashley McBryde, and Emily Ann Roberts have mastered that specific knack of storytelling, most mainstream artists haven’t.

So, I’ll stay in my ’90s country world. I’ll let some of the newer stuff trickle in if I like it. I’ll listen to the music and I’ll let myself drift away without a care in the world into my happy place. Because their radical honesty and the way that every single lyric feels lived-in and earned are the things that make my heart beat.
