Two weeks. It’s been two weeks since we lost Dolly. It’s been almost a week since we lost Gloria. How is this possible? And the nerve of my therapist today to do her damn job.
The loss of legends has me on high alert. I never imagined losing Dolly would be this heartbreaking for me. I mean, yes, I love her music and her as a human, but I never really thought she’d die. She was just larger than life. But I’ve found that in the last few weeks I’ll just randomly start to tear up because she’s just gone. I find myself checking all of the social media’s wondering if we lost someone else. Then I got the news we lost Gloria Steinem.
If Dolly was our fairy godmother, Gloria was our resistance leader. God we need her now more than ever. I promised I wouldn’t get political, but can we all at least agree on the following: 1. Gulf of Mexico and 2. Lake Ontario. Losing Gloria right now feels like taking a hundred steps back. In a time where some women are happily handing their lives over to be run by the patriarchy, some of us are joining the resistance. The spirit of Princess Leia and Gloria Steinem leading the way. I don’t know what to say other than, Rosie O’Donnell, we’re going to need you to step up girl. We need you.
The other thing that has been weighing on my heart is the realization that one day I’ll get the notification that Reba Nell McEntire has died. And I better be at home when I find out because my heart will absolutely be shattered. I will likely completely fall apart. I will take time off work to grieve. Why? Because that woman is my Mama. Period.
So, Reba, if you ever see this (haha, I know right?), I need you to do something for me. I need you to live in a bubble. No sickness. No accidents. I guess Rex and Shelby and baby Archer can visit every now and then, but that’s it. I know you miss your parents, and I know one day you’ll be with them again, but we still need you. I still need you. I’m not sure I can make it without you.
I’ll leave you all today with the words of Gloria Steinem. Words that have resonated with me far more in the last three years then they ever have before. Because I think we need to remember them right now.
The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off.
